When I think of the talent bench, I think of a sports team with the next round of players waiting there dressed for the game and ready to jump in and play. Sometimes teams have really great players on those benches and sometimes not so much. In business, we need at a minimum to think about our talent bench. Who can step up when the business grows or a team member leaves or goes in a different direction? Do we have anyone on the bench? These days we rely on our first string and their dedication. We also know how quickly things can change and then we are in a very stressful situation.
My point is that you need to be planning your talent and filling your bench. Don’t wait until you are in a crisis. Make sure you have the right people in the right seats and the next team members to fill those seats.
